British Virgin Islands

"The Sailing Capital of the Caribbean"

Overview

Why British Virgin Islands?

The British Virgin Islands are the sailing capital of the Caribbean โ€” an archipelago of over 60 islands, islets and cays with consistent trade winds, protected anchorages and a cruising ground that has been drawing sailors for generations. The Norman Island legend inspired Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, and the spirit of adventure is still very much alive in these waters.

Tortola is the main island โ€” a lush green mountain rising from the sea with Road Town as the capital and a series of beautiful beaches on the north shore. Virgin Gorda offers the Baths โ€” a geological wonder of enormous granite boulders creating grottos, pools and passages of extraordinary natural beauty. Jost Van Dyke is legendary among sailors for the Foxy's Bar and the Soggy Dollar Bar at White Bay, where the Painkiller cocktail was invented.

The BVI were severely impacted by Hurricane Irma in 2017 but have rebuilt with remarkable resilience. The sailing infrastructure has been restored, the beaches are beautiful and the island atmosphere of easy living and natural splendor remains completely intact.

Culture & People

The Soul of British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands have a culture shaped by their position as a British territory at the heart of the Caribbean sailing world โ€” a blend of West Indian warmth, British institutional heritage and the international sailing community that has been coming here for generations. The islands have a population of just 30,000 but host thousands of sailors, divers and travelers annually.

The recovery from Hurricane Irma demonstrated the resilience and community spirit of BVI residents โ€” the islands rebuilt with a determination that reflected a deep attachment to their home. The sailing culture here is not just tourism but a way of life โ€” the BVI Spring Regatta each April is one of the Caribbean's premier sailing events.
